Katie is an instructional designer at McKinsey Academy where she designs courses that accelerate top talent at leading organizations. Prior, she was an instructional designer at Stanford Graduate School of Business where she worked closely with faculty and media experts to leverage technology in the classrooms, and developed the GSB’s first MOOC, The Finance of Retirement and Pensions in which over 44,000 students enrolled. Prior to working at the GSB, she worked at Udacity where she designed and taught the first for-credit online statistics course, which currently has over 26,000 students enrolled (as of September 30, 2013). She has consulted for a number of education non-profits, start-ups, and for-profit companies on mostly product development, curriculum development, and pedagogy. She has been an educator in a number of capacities, from tutoring (100+ students) to teaching supplemental college courses, after-school programs, and summer school programs. Katie loves yoga, snowboarding, singing, reading, and traveling, and has played chess her whole life.

This idea must be something that allows you to experiment further, not a dead end. You test your idea with challenging questions. You repeat your work. Others repeat your work. More than reflections, this book is like sitting down with Carol and hearing her personal take on so many people that she worked with through the years. So much of the early shows are coming back to me in reading this!

Carol's best book and a joy to read.

I've read every one of Carol Burnett's book, including her play, "Hollywood Arms." But this is her BEST! Having met her a couple of times (once backstage at the St. James Theatre, Broadway, and the second time at Disney Studios), I can tell you what you see is what you get -- a sweet, caring, funny, witty, charming woman.

There are so many great stories and recollections in this book and a few gossipy tidbits -- like the ONLY guest star on Carol's show that she and her cast didn't like (referred to here at a "pony's ass," as he was very short. He complained about everything and was SO unprofessional he didn't even show up for the taping of the show)! Another is the night Carol had to fire Harvey Korman! Whaaaaaat?!

The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars, is that in Carol's list of and stories about her famous characters (Mrs. Wiggins, the charwoman, etc.), she left off my all-time favorite: Alice Portnoy of the Fireside Girls, the girl scout with a larcenous heart who blackmailed her victims into donating money. I wrote Carol an effusive fan letter about her book, and told her that I missed Alice.

But that is just a minor complaint. Read and enjoy -- and be grateful that someone like Carol Burnett walked the earth and made us all very happy! (9/22/16)

Burnett's Generous Spirit Shines Through

Fun, breezy book, like the lady herself. She takes her celebrity lightly, and avoids controversy. But she's nobody's fool, and one of the enjoyable aspects of the book describing her 11 years at the helm of her TV variety show is to appreciate her show business instincts. Obviously, her smarts had a lot to do with the show's long-running success, but she modestly shares credit with everyone around her and downplays her role.

Great Research for a Grad Student

This book is a wonderful book for those 2nd year Master's Epidemiology students who want a detailed but direct resource book for any and all ideas within graduate school. As the title entails, this is not an introductory book or for anyone who is new to the subject. I particularly love the chapter on confounding - it has helped me greatly with writing my thesis. The information is very deep at times, however, but is straight enough to be able to use as a quick resource for any forgotten first year ideas. I recommend this as a NECESSARY book for all graduate students and new professional epidemiologists. It's a timeless book that will more than pay for itself in its usefulness.

Epidemiology: Beyong the Basics

The first thing one notices is that the authors continuously cite Gordis as a reference; one might've just purchased Gordis instead of this book. From a reductionist point of view, everything contained in Szklo and Nieto is almost also the same as everything contained in Gordis, except for the illustrations (which are not that great in Gordis, either). However, one thing that is missing in Gordis, but present in this book, are the algebraic derivations of many measurement of association equations (i.e., relative risk, odds ratios, attributable risk, etc.). Szklo and Nieto also dedicate more time in describing various aspects of different epidemiological studies, such as in the selection of cases and controls, their related measurements of association, and relevant examples from the literature or current studies. In addition, the chapters are organized rather dryly, similar to a calculus text book (i.e, Chapter 4, Section 4.1, 4.1.1, 4.1.1.1, etc.), though that may just be the reason why this book is recommended for the more "serious" intermediate epidemiology student.
