Measuring the Universe: Our Historic Quest to Chart the horizons of Space and Time, by Kitty Ferguson

More than 2,000 years ago, Eratosthenes, in Alexandria, used a stick, a hole in the ground, sunllght at summer solstice, and elementary geometry to measure the circumference of the Earth with surprising accuracy, long before anyone was able to circumnavigate it. Today, scientists are attempting to measure the entire universe and to determine its origin. Although the methods have changed, the quest to chart the horizons of space and time continues to be one of the great adventures of science.

Measuring the Universe is an eloquent chronicle of the men and women– from Aristarchus to Cassini, Sir Isaac Newton to Henrietta Leavitt and Stephen Hawking–who have gradually unlocked the mysteries of "how far" and in so doing have changed our ideas about the size and nature of the universe and our place in it. Kitty Ferguson reveals their methods to have been as inventive as their results were–and are–eye-opening. Advances such as Copernicus's revolutionary insights about the arrangement of the solar system, William Herschel's meticulous creation of the first three-dimensional map of the universe, and Edwin Hubble's astonishing discovery that the universe is expanding have by turns revolutionized our concept of the universe. Connecting centuries of breakthroughs with the political and cultural events surrounding them, Ferguson makes astronomy part of the sweep of history.

To measure the seemingly immeasurable, scientists have always pushed the boundaries of the imagination–today, for example, facing the paradox of an ever-expanding universe that doesn't appear to expand into anything. In Kitty Fergeson's skillfill hands, the unimaginable becomes accessible and the splendid quest something we all can share.

Amazon.com Review
If you want to measure how big a stick is, you can use a ruler. Want to know how tall a windmill is? Don't waste time climbing to the top with a long measuring tape. Instead, use the old shadow trick--measure the length of a yardstick's shadow, then measure the windmill's shadow and use ratios to figure out the windmill's height. Even though the windmill is big and intimidating, you can find out its size while remaining safely on the ground. This is the first example in science author Kitty Ferguson's fine book Measuring the Universe, and it sets the reader's brain firmly on the right track for understanding.

The topic here is measurement of faraway, distant, difficult things. Starting with Eratosthenes, who found a way of measuring the earth's circumference, and continuing through to modern astrophysicists' quest to measure the universe itself, Ferguson takes us on a full tour of the seemingly immeasurable. Readers are treated to enthusiastic chapters covering all the basic steps astronomers (dating back to Aristarchus of Samos) have taken to understand the arrangement of astronomical objects. How big are stars? Is that black hole moving toward us or away from us? Where is the edge of everything? And how big will the universe get before it stops expanding? You'll meet the men and women who have sought answers to these seemingly impossible questions in this accessible history. Ferguson brilliantly illuminates their personal quests and demonstrates the usefulness of each discovery in driving the next attempt to measure the universe. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
When you wish upon a star, do you ever consider that the bright one over there in the Hyades might be closer than the one in the Big Dipper that you usually wish on? Or that your wish might get there faster? Although even the closest star (Proxima Centauri) is so far away (25 1/4 trillion miles) that humanity will probably never travel to it, Ferguson (Prisons of Light: Black Holes) demonstrates why knowing its distance from us is important, and not just for reasons of wish fulfillment. For only by drawing an accurate scale map of the universe, she explains, can scientists estimate its age, one of the most hotly contested issues of our time. Ferguson begins with attempts in antiquity to establish the distance to the sun and the five planets seen by the naked eye. She discusses the findings of Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo, and how each drew on the others' work. Her simple explanations of the discoveries of stellar parallax, the Doppler effect and redshift, and of absorption spectra make important scientific concepts clear for general readers. She goes on to elucidate how astronomers determine how far away other stars are by using a type of star called Cepheid, as well as the spectacular stellar self-destructions known as supernovae as "standard candles." To conclude her engrossing survey, Ferguson covers some of the paradoxes that scientists confront, such as that some estimates of the age of the universe have determined that it is younger than some of its oldest stars, and that the amount of observable mass in the universe is only about 10% of what should be there. From Library Journal
Ferguson (The Fire in the Equations: Science, Religion, and the Search for God) is a popular science author, and deservedly soAshe has a gift for explaining difficult scientific concepts in clear prose, and her engaging style conveys a real sense of the social, political, and intellectual times in which these discoveries were made. She captures the excitement and wonder of discovery and provides an understanding of what motivates scientists. This book has the feel of a historical novelAin Ferguson's hands, astronomy becomes part of the sweep of history. Starting with Eratosthenes and his calculation of the earth's circumference using the shadows cast in a well, and moving through Stephen Hawking's work on black holes, Ferguson tells the tale of our search for our place in the universe. This book is nicely illustrated with photos, tables, and diagrams, and there is also a useful glossary. Recommended for academic as well as public libraries.AJames Olson, Northeastern Illinois Univ. Wow
By Richard Fitzgerald
This book weaves lucid science and history together into a most fascinating tapestry. You will learn about the search for the size of the universe, but you will also learn about the world around you. You will learn how science works, and how people work. You will learn what we know, and how much more we have to learn. This is a beautifully crafted book and well worth the time of scientists, historians, and normal people too!

Completely entertaining and informative
By David A. Foster
I was wowed by this book completely. The narrative of the relationship between the Catholic church and the sciences alone made it worthwhile. If you haven't read a book such as this and think you know what really happened with Galileo Galilei... well, you probably don't.

Almost a really good book
By A Customer
This is a very readable book, with many ups and downs. It tells the story of key contributors to our understanding of the universe and their quest to measure it in their time and with the tools available to them. It also does a very good job of explaining some basic concepts. It doesn't do such a good job with more complex concepts. And there are some simple concepts that just don't need to be explained repetitively.
For instance, the explanations and diagrams explaining parallax are very good. Sometime after that the term parsec appears in the text without any explanation at all. Another example: Cepheid stars are fundamental to current attempts to measure the distant objects, and that is made very clear. But why we can and should depend on Cepheids is not explained. A final example: I don't know how many times she explains that 10 with an exponent menas one followed by that number of zeros, or preceded by that number of zeroes for a negative exponent - but it is way, way more times than necessary and occurs throughout the entire book.
A second edition, perhaps with better editing, could easily be much better and be a very good book. Never-the-less, this book is interesting and generally easy to read, and covers a lot of ground about the participants.

Art Since 1900: Modernism, Antimodernism, Postmodernism, Vol. 2 - 1945 to the Present, 2nd Edition, by Hal Foster, Rosalind Krauss, Yve-Al

Five of the most influential and provocative art historians of our time have come together to provide a comprehensive history of art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries―the most important chronicle of modern art for a generation.

The authors of Art Since 1900 adopt a unique, year-by-year structure in which they present more than one hundred and twenty short essays, each focusing on crucial events and the creation of a seminal work, the publication of an artistic manifesto, or the opening of a major exhibition that tell the story of the dazzling diversity of practice and interpretation that characterizes art of this period. Each turning point and breakthrough of modernism and postmodernism is explored in depth, as are the frequent anti-modernist reactions that proposed alternative visions of art and the world. Art Since 1900 introduces students to the key theoretical approaches to modern and contemporary art in a way that enables them to comprehend the many “voices” of art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. 311 full-color and 128 black-and-white illustrations

Read this book. It will improve your mind.
By Blue State Resident
Although I have read only the first half of "Art Since 1900," I feel compelled by the negative comments offered by other readers to express my considerable admiration for this book. Because I am not an academic or other art world insider, I have no axe to grind regarding which artists or movements may be under or over-represented in the text. After reading a number of books on modern art, I have found this one to be, on the whole, head and shoulders above the rest. For example, "The Shock of the New" by Robert Hughes is a fine book, but it is very superficial by comparison with this one. What impresses me most about "Art Since 1900" is the incorporation of ideas from other disciplines dealing with modernity, including philosophy, psychology, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, and literary theory, which provides a broader context for the subject than is usually presented in art history texts. For the benefit of those who are not already familiar with the intellectual history of the twentieth century, the authors include four introductory chapters and a glossary that help to familiarize readers with concepts of marxism, critical theory, psychoanalysis, formalism, structuralism, post-structuralism, and postmodernism. While the introductory chapters are not a substitute for wider reading on those topics, the authors succeed very admirably in making "highbrow" ideas accessible to "middlebrow" readers. But it is not necessary to master the contents of the introductory chapters in order to obtain a great deal of benefit from the remainder of the book. Each of the nearly 100 short chapters is, by itself, a polished gem that offers much food for thought, so that it is possible to approach the book by reading one chapter at a time and meditating on the ideas presented there for a while before returning to the text. In fact, such an approach may serve to resist the unconscious desire to oversimplify the great multiplicity of works and ideas that constitute modern art. While fragmentation is consistent with the postmodern attitude of the authors toward the subject matter, comprehension by others is facilitated by supplementing the chronological ordering of chapters with an inter-textual system of cross-referencing by artist and movement. Unlike more conventional art history texts, this book can provide readers with a greater appreciation of the capacity of modern art to provoke the kind of critical thinking that liberates the mind. What could be more useful in a society that is so thoroughly dominated by conformity and anti-intellectualism? If all Americans would read this book, the White House might never again be occupied by an ignoramous.

What's New
By Benjamin Lima
The publishers don't make it easy to see what's new in the second edition. Based on my initial examination, there is:

* "1949b" (Foster) on CoBRA and the New Brutalists

* "1962d" (Krauss) on Greenberg, abstraction and Pop

* "2007a" (Krauss) on Christian Marclay, Sophie Calle, William Kentridge, and the post-medium condition, with box on Brian O'Doherty and the white cube

* "2007c" (Foster) on Damien Hirst

* "2009a" (Joselit) on Tania Bruguera and Our Literal Speed

* "2009b" (Joselit) on Jutta Koether, Wade Guyton, R. H. Quaytman among others, transitive painting and "Painting Beside Itself"

* "2009c" (Joselit) on Harun Farocki, video games and modern war

* "2010a" (Joselit) on Ai Weiwei, Tate Modern and China

here come the grownups
By J. Smith
Art Since 1900 probably shouldn't be read by artists, younger ones at least. Here is where all your sincerity, all your peer support, all your sudden joy in thinking you've finally got it right this time, goes to die, splattered like meaningless bracken against the wall of Context, of History. Probably what's enraged so many people so much about this book is that its authors, scholars of 20th century art if there ever were any, aren't in the least afraid to make judgements, to call a bad idea a bad idea, to explore the limits of an artwork's relevance to the question: can art still matter? The criticisms of the book all seem to want to posit some grand democracy of artistic endeavor, or better still an anarchy, all the while ignoring the fact that we've already gone past the point of anarchy and moved into pure spectacle, which can only exist within the disavowal of history, and of judgement. Utopia's already here, but this book wants to mean more than that. Ultimately its message seems to be, simply: not making crap takes hard work. Read it and suffer.

Voices From the Other Side: An Oral History of Terrorism Against Cuba, by Keith Bolender

Since the early 1960s, few other countries have endured more acts of terrorism against civilian targets than Cuba, and the US has had its hand in much of it. This book gives a voice to the victims.

Keith Bolender brings to bear the enormous impact that terrorism has had on Cuba’s civilian population, with over 1,000 documented incidents resulting in more than 3,000 deaths and 2,000 injuries. Bolender allows the victims to articulate the atrocities the Cuban people have suffered - which largely originate from Cuban counter-revolutionaries based in the US, often with the active help of the CIA.

Voices From The Other Side includes first-person interviews with more than 75 Cuban citizens who have been victims of these terrorist acts, or have had family members or close friends die from the attacks. It is a unique resource for activists, journalists and students interested in Cuba's torrid relationship with the US.

Review
"Since 1960, successive US administrations have waged an aggressive illegal war against Cuba, the human toll of which has long been ignored. Bolender's book corrects this ignorance, offering a true people's history of perseverance. Highly recommended." --Greg Grandin, Professor of History at New York University and author of Empire's Workshop: Latin America, the United States, and the Rise of the New Imperialism (2006)"Abook that should be read and passed around…[This book does far more than the already-important goal of putting a human face to the victims of these terrorist acts ...it gives us a new understanding of the psychological warfare the US has been carrying out parallel to its economic and military war. This is a book that should be in every library and every progressive bookshelf." -- Karen Lee Wald, author of Children of Che"Counter-narratives are always welcomed: a way to develop new perspectives and challenge old perceptions. Voices From the Other Side is especially timely, for it turns the prevailing paradigm of terrorism on its head: in this instance, Cuba as object of a policy of sanctions, subversion, and sabotage as experienced in the daily lives of the Cuban people." -- Louis A. Prez, Jr., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill"This is a book that should be in every library and on every progressive bookshelf. I urge people to buy it, read it, pass it on to others." -- Karen Lee Wald, author of Children of Che: Child Care and Education in Cuba

Exposes the double standard of the US 'war on terror'
By William D. Aitken
The story of US-Cuba relations, post 1959, has generally been subject to a serious information deficit. Those not raised on a diet of `Fox News' will have some idea of the intransigent bully-boy attitude adopted by successive US Administrations towards the recalcitrant little southern neighbour, although it might be thought that `terrorism' is too extreme a labelling of some of the measures taken. In fact, as this `oral history' of Cuba's half-century of subjection to US foreign policy shows, they are extreme measures wholly deserving of the label. Moreover, while critiques of American meddling in Cuba's affairs abound outside mainstream media they have been largely incomplete for lack of any account of the human toll. The lives of those lost or changed dramatically by personal experience of the terror have been unjustly ignored, and this study by ex `Toronto Star' journalist Keith Bolender goes some way towards correcting the ignorance. His chapters detailing the various incidents and phases of US-sponsored attacks on the presumed enemy are supplemented by interviews with survivors whose testimonies are frequently harrowing.

The history of the United States self-proclaimed `right' to interfere in Cuba begins long before the revolution. In 1832 the then Secretary of State John Quincy Adams declared that should Cuba become disconnected from Spain it would be unable to support itself. Triumphalist ravings occasioned by the 1898 Spanish-American war over possession of the island have their echo nearer our own time. In his introduction Noam Chomsky de-sanctifies the morally over-hyped John F. Kennedy and likewise points up Henry Kissinger's elephantine presence in the room. The latter's drivelling proclamation about `managing the global equilibrium', paraphrased as ruling the world effectively, is amply illustrated by his support for Ronald Reagan's terrorist wars in Latin America and the overthrow of Chile's democratically elected Salvador Allende. The 800 acts of terror documented by Cuba since 1960, which claimed some 3,478 lives and injured 2,099, have their place in the same scenario where any refusal to bow to the great northern neighbour's whim was not to be tolerated. The attacks would, it was hoped, put such a strain politically and economically on Cuba that its government would finally lose the support of the people. Here we come up against a deranged mindset which, bereft of logic as well as scruple, assumes that the victims of terrorism will seek the overthrow of the system under attack rather than pursue those directly responsible.

Some of the culprits are still pursued. Closure was never had on the 1976 bombing of Cubana Airlines flight 455 in which the entire Cuban fencing team were among the 76 killed. Six people affected by the tragedy are interviewed, including the daughter of one of the co-pilots. Although two Venezuelans confessed to the bombing CIA-trained Orlando Bosch and Posada Carriles, the masterminds behind the atrocity, would evade justice. Bosch was pardoned by George Bush Senior at the request of his other son Jeb, later governor of Florida. As for Carriles, his terrorist background includes involvement in Cuban hotel bombings in which an Italian tourist died, and in this he was an accomplice of the organisation Alpha 66 which believes tourists are legitimate targets. When the repellent Carriles' stated that `we didn't want to hurt anybody', as if to urge the point that bombers can feel pity for their victims, it might have impressed the Bush clan if nobody else. The father of the dead Italian tells the author that his son had two ambitions, to open a restaurant in Cuba and bring his soccer team to the island. He also expresses his admiration for a country in which no children go hungry.

The trail of carnage began shortly after Batista's overthrow. Fifty years on the US State Department and CIA refuse to declassify documents relating to the double explosion that ripped through the French vessel `La Coubre' in Havana Harbour and left 100 dead. Also described are attacks - some of them fatal - on volunteers taking part in the early literacy campaigns and `Cine Movil' project in the countryside. Department stores, coastal fishing villages and a packed theatre were considered legitimate targets. Nor has the effect of biological terrorism been any less catastrophic. In the `70s and `80s outbreaks were registered of swine fever, bird fever, brucellosis and Dengue 2, along with infections that reduced the country's banana and tobacco crops. That all of it could be explained away as part of one huge spontaneously occurring natural disaster is literally beyond belief. In any event CIA spokesmen are quoted who admit their part in artificially manipulating epidemics as part of the attempted de-stabilisation of the country. No-one has specifically claimed responsibility for the lethal hemorrhagic Dengue infections but, suspiciously, no cases of it were reported in either Jamaica or the Bahamas. `What fault did these children have, what political issue do they have?' asks one bereaved witness of the terror, a man whose 8 year old daughter was one of 100 children lost to the disease. It is a question that applies equally to children who were the victims of another programme hatched by the opposition.

In 1961 `Operation Peter Pan'. jointly conceived by church officials in Cuba and Miami in concert with US State Department officers and the CIA, promulgated the lie that every child was to be snatched from its home and made a ward of the new regime. This caused the exodus of more than 14,000 children who, separated from their parents, were taken in by Miami church organisations. Thus, the forces of reaction committed the very crime against Cuba's children they claimed to be preventing. One anti-Castro activist involved in the deception would later relent and describe it as child abuse and a form of `psychological terrorism'. The trauma of separation from the family at an early age is borne out by the case histories included, first person narratives demonstrating a fondness for the mother country and therefore how abjectly misconceived the whole scheme was. It is an outlook further emphasised by those interviewed under the chapter headed `The Cuban National Identity'. Friendly, community spirited and blessed with a strong sense of humour the people still retain a desire for independence and the right to make something of their country by their own efforts. It will, of course, be a source of some bafflement to those of a neocon disposition why Cubans should feel that the system they live under is actually worth defending and not be distracted by hostile propaganda pushed to the extremes documented in Bolender's study.

It is argued that certain restrictions on the lives of the Cuban people should be seen in the light of concerns about national security rather than dismissed as part and parcel of Fidel Castro's repressive state machinery. This is a point of some controversy. What is in no doubt is the right of any country under attack to defend itself and to this end five Cuban intelligence agents were assigned to penetrate counter-revolutionary organisations in Florida in the 1990's to gain information about impending plots. Though motivated by a sense of patriotic duty and the intention to save lives the five would be denigrated by an almost universally hostile US media as spies. (A Spanish-language Cuban dissidents' blog `Hemosoido', which invites readers to translate the various contributions into other languages, repeats the calumny). Betrayed by cynical and duplicitous FBI machinations their fate was sealed in 1998 by a biased judge and a jury stacked with the kind of hate-fuelled element that took to the streets of Miami in 2006 to celebrate when Castro appeared to be on his last legs. A total of 4 life sentences plus 75 years was handed down, indicating how seriously we might take the `war on terror' and the claims of its proponents to be acting in the interests of democracy and those in danger of falling victim to political murder.

Orlando Bosch died in April this year, his funeral attended by a predictably lachrymose crocodile contingent who would never have shed a tear for his victims. His daughter's fragrant characterization of him as a loving father whom she could never associate with violence is an affront to Bolander's interviewees with their stories of families devastated by the activities of Bosch and his `freedom fighter' brothers in arms. He is, sadly, not the only one in that category to be given the same simple-minded benefit of the doubt. The trial of fellow Cubana plane bomber Posada Carriles in El Paso, Texas, for perjury and immigration fraud - not terrorism - recently ended with not guilty verdicts being returned on all charges. A free man in Miami once again he will not be handed over to Cuba to be tried for mass murder because of US government claims that he might be tortured, something which would naturally go against the Christian principles of any Administration eager to excuse its own excesses in Guantanamo as not amounting to `real' torture. Meanwhile, the blockade remains firmly in place despite President Obama's tinkering with the restrictions on travel and the transfer of monies. While a disproportionate influence on Cuba-related matters continues to be wielded by the anti-Castro right we can only hope that the ongoing campaign to free the Miami Five will give them their day in court once again, only this time in an environment conducive to the administration of justice and a long overdue acquittal.

A Brain Wider Than the Sky: A Migraine Diary, by Andrew Levy

With more than one in ten Americans—and more than one in five families—affected, the phenomenon of migraine is widely prevalent yet often ignored or misdiagnosed. For Andrew Levy, his migraines were occasional reminders of a persistent illness that he’d wrestled with half his life. Then in 2006 Levy was struck almost daily by a series of debilitating migraines that kept him essentially bedridden for months, imprisoned by pain and nausea that retreated only briefly in gentler afternoon light. When possible, he kept careful track of what triggered an onset and in luminous prose recounts his struggle to live with migraines, his meticulous attempts at calibrating his lifestyle to combat and avoid them, and most tellingly, the personal relationship a migraineur develops—an almost Stockholm syndrome–like attachment—with the indescribable pain, delirium, and hallucinations. Levy researched how personalities and artists throughout history—Alexander Pope, Freud, Virginia Woolf, even Elvis—dealt with their migraines and candidly describes his rehabilitation with the aid of prescription drugs and his eventual reemergence into the world, back to work and writing.

An enthralling blend of memoir and provocative analysis, A Brain Wider Than the Sky offers rich insights into an illness whose effects are too often discounted and whose sufferers are too often overlooked

Review
"This is a wonderful hybrid of a book about that most metaphysical of pains, the migraine headache. Part memoir, part historical inquiry, part philosophical meditation, "A Brain Wider Than the Sky" takes its reader on a physical and psychological journey and shows us that beauty and tranquility can be found in the least likely of places." -- Ann Packer, author of "Songs With out Words" and "The Dive from Clausen's Pier"

"A most remarkable book. "A Brain Wider Than the Sky" is learned, witty, allusive, and poetic -- and migraine becomes, for Levy, a window into the whole landscape of body and mind, health and disease, and the sheer complexity of being alive." -- Oliver Sacks, author of "Migraine" and "Musicophilia"

Review
"A most remarkable book. A Brain Wider Than the Sky is learned, witty, allusive, and poetic -- and migraine becomes, for Levy, a window into the whole landscape of body and mind, health and disease, and the sheer complexity of being alive." -- Oliver Sacks, author of Migraine and Musicophilia

"This is a wonderful hybrid of a book about that most metaphysical of pains, the migraine headache. Part memoir, part historical inquiry, part philosophical meditation, A Brain Wider Than the Sky takes its reader on a physical and psychological journey and shows us that beauty and tranquility can be found in the least likely of places."-- Ann Packer, author of Songs With out Words and The Dive from Clausen's Pier

"Andrew Levy has turned migraines into a window on the human condition. His epic, erudite, obsessive, despairingly isolated battle with this half-mystical demon, ranging across civilization but always ending up in a dark room, has eerie resonance for those who do not suffer -- until the surprise ending, whereupon we see the common ground."-- Suzannah Lessard, author of Architect of Desire: Beauty and Danger in the Stanford White Family

"[Levy] collects headaches like rare butterflies, and he has a rare, possibly singular gift for fitting words to them...His eloquence is all the more remarkable because migraines are a sinkhole for language....encourages us to generalize from his example to take in the true dimensions of what is still a largely silent epidemic."-- Lev Grossman, Time

"Andrew Levy's beautiful memoir, A Brain Wider Than the Sky, is welcome relief....an affecting, readable account of the pain of migraine and the weird wonder of it. Levy seamlessly glides from the experience of his own suffering to broader neurological and historical realms...[his] prose shines...beautiful description and compelling research...unflinching self-scrutiny is what elevates A Brain Wider Than the Sky beyond many less successful memoirs of illness....the irrefutable reality is that Levy's suffering is not his alone, and the consequences of that fact are where the heart of this fine book lies."-- Christine Montross, The Washington Post

"I love this book. It's wonderful, dangerous, compelling, nerve-rattling, and absolutely brilliant. It is intimate and yet of enormous scope, it is funny and yet deeply vulnerable, and, most important, it is just so smart as it portrays both the larger public history of migraine and the intensely personal history of Levy's own experiences with this debilitating and ongoing neurological event."-- Fred Leebron, author of In the Middle of All This and Five Figures

"[Andrew Levy] produces a dynamic portrayal of the migraineurs' world, an ominous alternative universe where the subtlest sight, sound, smell or innocent event can trigger an attack....Sufferers will empathize; most general readers will sympathize. An impressive meditation on a devastating affliction."-- Kirkus

real support for the migraine soul
By E. Beane
Andrew Levy eloquently conveys the inner world of a migraine sufferer. It was interesting to read about the many historical figures who suffered migraines, but as one who has read just about every "headache" book, it was his personal story that reached me the most.
As migraine sufferers we can find guides to what medications might help, what foods to maybe avoid, etc, but never have I come across such a gripping, relatable account of what it's REALLY like to live with migraine.
In reading his memoir I found comfort. I also was surprised at how he would say something in words that I had felt so many times during a severe attack. I think my favorite quote is near the end of the book where he says: "The only person who loves sunlight more than someone who loves sunlight is someone who must ration it." You see, that quote would only make sense at first read to a migraine sufferer.
I hope this book finds it's way into many a migraineur's hands...and hearts, like it did mine.

Not Just for Migraineurs
By Jay Lesandrini
Part memoir, part history, part medical journal, part literary criticism. Andy Levy weaves all of this into a book that is as entertaining as it is informational, and for those who have silently suffered migraines for years, I think that the book could provide a sort of validation that their suffering is real.

In order to combat his own severe migraines, Levy dives into the subject, reading as much as his headaches will allow him, and then parses that knowledge out to us as if telling his story could be the cure.

He provides stories about historical figures whose migraines affected (positively and negatively) their contribution to society, including the possibility that St. Paul's conversion might have been the result of severe migraine, or that Alice in Wonderland was Lewis Carroll's attempt to describe the a migraine experience.

At the heart of this book, though, is the personal account of Levy's own battle. And it is here, that the book is most poignant. It is here that Levy, the migraineur, lets down the guard and invites the reader into his world. It is here where fellow migraine sufferers can take heart and believe that their own pain is valid.

Levy points out that 12% of the U.S. population suffers from migraines. So, if you don't suffer them, you know someone who does, and this book will help you understand their daily struggle to cope with the disease.

There can be life when you have migraines.
By Migraine Chick
I really liked how Andrew Levy uses his book to capture the struggles of living with migraine along with a historical journey of migraine treatments of the past. He also writes about artists and personalities throughout history who also had migraine such Virginia Wolf, Van Gogh, Freud, and even Elvis.

Living with chronic daily migraine, I was interested to learn about how migraine has influenced literature, music and even religion. I had no idea how migraine had permeated the realm of artists like Van Gogh and writers like Emily Dickinson, nor was I aware that the book "Alice in Wonderland" was about migraine symptoms experienced by the Louis Carroll.

On a personal note, Levy explores the effects migraines have on relationships, exposing the range of emotions one has to go through in trying to maintain a relationship with a loved one when you are in chronic pain.

This book really expanded my knowledge of migraines impact on the world, and it made me feel not so alone with living with this illness. It also gave me hope that there can be life and positive creativity even when you have migraines.

Second Turn
By Mahendran J. Nair
This is one of the best books I've read. MT's insight to the events in Mahabharatha is amazing. He explains very clearly the loose ends and grey areas in the epic. He suceeds in bring out the man in Bhima, who is otherwise viewed as a strong gaint warrior who is portrayed in the epic as a glutton with a dumb charector. In this we see the emotional side of it. The sorrow of the man who sees the Pandavas rejoicing when his eldest son,Kadolkacha is killed.Just because he was a rakshas and Karna used up his secret weapon on him which makes Arjuna safe. This book bring out the true colors of a lot of charectors whom we usually consider as gods. This book is truely revolutionary which makes MT one of my favourite author

The Epic Mahabharatha through Bhima's viewpoint
By Biju
A radical approach in interpreting 'the silences of Vyasa' when he narrated the epic Mahabharatha, the 'Second Turn' ('Randamoozham' for those who know Malayalam) describes the events taking Bhima, the second of the Pandavas as the pivotal point. For those who like to view things differently, MT offers a real feast for thought. A must read!

Lost in translation
By Shari's Peculiar Fascination
I really excited about this story, as I love the Mahabharata; but there's no English translation! I don't think the description makes this detail clear enough.
