Unapologetic advice on building personal power while understanding the nuances of other people's egos

This book is broken down into laws that all follow the same format: 1. Judgement - author breaks down the law in a conversation tone. 2. Key to Power- detailed explanation of the judgement. 3. Reversal - the cons of the law.

As a woman, at first, I found myself thinking some of the concepts seemed "not-so-nice" i.e. keeping people dependent on you or using scapegoats, but I think that's because women are trained to manage the emotional temperature in the workplace. This book would be a good tool for women to break out of that role and focus more on personal ambition. It discusses the importance of keeping emotions at bay while manipulating external circumstances for one's own benefit. My favorite example of how to do this is by using a red herring or distraction to pull focus on benign things so you can tend to the real issues- those things that win notoriety for you.

There are plenty of examples on how to discern your masters, peers, and enemies. Understanding what makes people tick; if they are self-serving types or charitable types, determines the best way to play them to get the end result you seek from them. Only offer alternatives to a problem that benefit you - that way there's no negative path. It's this type of insight that made me pause and consider how I can apply these laws to several aspects in my life.

The overarching theme of many of the laws is to display conventional behavior w/quiet confidence, even while working out unconventional and bold ideas. When I find myself negotiating contracts, I'll remember to pick this up and re-read a few laws to sharpen my skills.

I've heard The 48 Laws of Power is a great book but never had the time to read the full version, so I decided to purchase this shorter book to give it a try. It was very well written. The book sum up each law with an analysis and the reversal of the law. It was an easy read.

I didn't want to read the 400+ page original book, since I don't have the time to do that. So I got this book, and read it in a couple of hours. It was great because it explains all you need to know about the 48 laws of power, witthout all the fillers. I like that it goes right to the point, and didn't make me waste my time. The book is well written and it is a very good summary. Recommended

Acknowledging Pain And Loss And Working Toward More Honest Living

Written in 1992, when perceptions of LGBT lifestyles were culturally far worse than today, this book was an uncommon voice.

"Coming Out Within" - by Craig O'Neill, a Catholic Priest, and Kathleen Ritter, a psychotherapist and professor at CSU Bakersfield - asserted a premise (in 1992) that many (if not nearly all) non-heterosexuals developed their gender, sexual, familial, work, role, and relationship identities in a "heterosexual-only" Western Culture environment. In the late 20th Century, LGBT self-images were often created in dramatic and constant incongruities with popular "acceptable imagery."

It is important for everyone, in any era, to have easily available access to healthy portrayals, imagery, and written contextual reasoning to support our honest feelings and desires.

If you want to understand why I work so consistently to highlight intelligent, healthy, and considerate LGBT images of relationships and sexuality, then reading this book will give you more cultural imagery and self-perception concepts to consider.

I would not be surprised if Deborah Tolman, who in 2005 wrote "Dilemmas of Desire: Teenage Girls Talk About Sexuality," read "Coming Out Within" before writing her introduction to her book. Tolman's discussion of a "heterosexual exclusive" culture has many similarities to the authors' ideas in "Coming Out Within".

"Coming Out Within" may help homosexuals recognize some of their likely unrealized hurt, loss, and pain they took onto themselves as "expected" or "part of being gay in a straight society." The authors suggest it may be more healthy to acknowledge the mistreatment and unfairness they've grown accustomed to receiving from heterosexually-dominant families and communities.

"Some lesbians and gay men achieve success in the workplace at the expense of their integrity. They pretend that they are not who they are and, as a result, live distant from their inner beings, often in a world of fear and denial. The trappings of success that come with buying into a hetrosexually based life image are exchanged for the turmoil of incongruity and the pain of living separated from their souls. Peter Tchaikovsky described this well when he said, 'All that is left is to pretend. But to pretend to the end of one's life is the highest torment.' " p. 26

The authors then outline a therapeutic 8-Step process from "Loss to Transformation," giving many illustrative and practical examples each step of the way.

I don't recommend the book because I think their 8-phase healing process is the way to address related issues. I recommend the book because their 8-phase process is one more way to consider addressing related issues. The authors also wisely recommend individual counseling in addition to taking self-therapeutic steps.

This is a POWERFUL book!

I am not overexaggerating when I say that this is one of the most helpful books that have been published for lesbian and gay folk trying to understand the experiences involved in coming out. It was of profound help in my own journeying through the dynamics and issues involved in coming to terms with the changes involved in coming out. Spiritually reassuring. Very helpful for parents of gay and lesbian folks too.

Book will prepare you better for tests

I scored an 84 out of 100 taking a county police test after reading this book briefly. If you actually take more time to study it more it will prepare you better. The personality questions on the test I took were all about yourself which is no right or wrong answer but I'm guessing they didn't like mine. Overall I was ranked 226 out of around 2000 people testing.

The Best

This is the best Chinese-English, English-Chinese dictionary I have found to date. It is easy for both individuals who have no Chinese language and for Chinese speakers to use. The English-Chinese, although British English, shows characters and PinYin so words can quickly be looked up and the PinYin pronunciation deciphered. The Chinese-English is rather like a traditional Chinese dictionary. One can either look up the PinYin to find the character - both simplified and traditional are listed - or reference the radical, cross-reference the character by stroke count, and find the PinYin for the character, then look it up in the alphabetical listing. No one ever said Chinese was easy for Westerners, but this dictionary really works for me.

Good dictionary, English/Chinese or Chinese/English no problem with this.
Some people say it is too big for a pocket dictionary , I say it's just right ( of course it will not fit in your pocket )
but is packed with plenty of words, so if you are learning Chinese or if you know someone who is Chinese wants to learn English this is for them.
It has Pinyin and Chinese Characters and also the English pronunciations.
What a better tool to learn a language than a dictionary, you can't go wrong here.

It's a fine dictionary -- very nice in fact, but I need a dictionary that has Traditional characters for each entry. This one occasionally has Traditional characters in brackets, but not for every entry that has both a Simplified and Traditional character, only some, which makes it incomplete.

About the Author
W.E. Fairbairn taught unarmed combat to the famed British Commandos and the U.S. armed forces during World War II. Before the war he served as assistant commissioner of the Shanghai Police Force. He was the inventor of the Fairbairn Commando Knife and the author of the classics Get Tough and Shooting to Live.

Douglas Fairbanks (1883 1939) was a very successful actor, director, screenwriter, and author. He is best known for his early social comedies and popular swashbucklers, such as The Mark of Zorro and The Iron Mask.

An Essential Addition to the Library of Any Martial Artist Serious about the Hand to Hand Combat Aspect!

Martial Arts have been around for at least 4,000 year. Many Styles, theories, Masters, and internationally recognized fighting sports surfaced on the earth. However, while the average Martial Art Master had a tendency to keep long term membership of his students and make the Martial Art a way of life involving a daily or weekly regimen of training to be fit and conditioned to battle, by doing so he did not support the students' need to learn self defense skills quickly. Generations perpetuating the objective of keeping long term membership and fear for competitive teaching business caused any accumulated knowledge of how to fight in self defense and prevail to be lost. Many so called Martial Arts Black Belts including the author of this book, had found it that their years of Martial Arts training did not help them to prevail in a serious street confrontation and got beaten, stabbed, cut, severely injured and some died. W.E Fairbairn was one of the Western Hand to Hand Combat Police and Military pioneers that documented and published his ideas in writing. As a former Krav Maga Chief Instructor in the Israeli Defense Force , I was aware that some of Fairbairn's ideas and training methods had influenced Imrich Lichtenfeld, the founder of Krav Maga who in fact helped to solve the missing links of the Science and Art of Hand to Hand Fighting Training Methods.

Scientific Self-Defence

Clear and easy to understand. Some of the techniques display a sense of "chivalry" and an intent to subdue an attacker with the least amount of injury to them. The principles are sound, however, they would need to drilled to be of good use to a practitioner.

Comments regarding the overall character of criminals is a bit outdated. The author implies that criminals are generally a cowardly lot and should they approach you with a weapon they would not be very likely to use it. While this may have been true about most criminals around the turn of the century, this is, obviously, not true today where a high percentage of street criminals commit armed robbery or muggings and still injure, kill, or rape their victim despite the victim's cooperation.

Overall, it is a good reference source for anyone who is interested in reality based self-defense and can be useful if applied with more decisive techniques and follow through to neutralize an attacker.

Scientific Self Defense

I liked this book. Written at a time when Shainghi, China was wilder than our wild west. Here it was early 1900's to 1930's, some of the motorcycle cops had sidecars with machine guns. Shootouts not that uncommon. Many police had bullet proof vests of the era. Kidnappings, robberies, burglaries were fairly standard. Taking criminals into custody was tricky, same as today. But a lot of good basic information, you can't really go wrong.
