Superior in many ways

There are many sources of information about staying safe online. Two things set Josh Och’s Light, Bright and Polite: Use Social Media to Impress Colleges and Employers apart from most.

First, he goes into detail regarding privacy settings on various social networks and apps. He has gone to the safety and security managers of most of them for first-hand, detailed explanations of how to customize privacy settings. This includes describing in plain words how spammers and scammers work. Following his advice, such as to regularly search deeply for your name and details on search engines, will put you in the driver’s seat when it comes to your online reputation. He gets specific on how to manage what information is available to others, for instance explaining the Activity Log on Facebook where you can survey everything you have ever posted on fb and remove what you have reconsidered.

Second, he is full-bore PRO social media networks. None of the stay away from them, impossible-to-follow advice. Taking the view that a good offense is the best defense, Josh promotes building an impressive online portfolio, with guidance about what personal information it is best to omit. In doing so he makes creating one’s digital presence a project to work at proactively, with enthusiasm and savvy, rather than a playground in which to entertain friends and shock strangers by being ridiculous.

It might be good advice for the 13 to 20-something age bracket who are seeking to look good to everyone, but if top universities could fill every incoming class with valedictorians and are looking instead for interesting people (as Alan Katzman of Social Assurity LLC was told in researching the topic), writing only what is very easy to agree with could wind up sounding so vanilla as to be not very interesting after all. Even moderation needs to be in moderation!

Full of real-life tips and best practices from countless young success stories

I'm not a parent, but I know that the lives of my young nieces will be greatly impacted by how they use social media - for better or for worse. I bought this book with them in mind, but as I read it I also found many of the chapters to be valuable for students and job seekers of any age or experience. Thinking about the social media "branding" of some of my long-time contacts, it's easy to see the end result of using social media without a strategy to ensure your personal brand is presented in a consistently positive light. We all have those friends who are social media cautionary tales; this book provides teens and parents with a comprehensive, no-nonsense road map to avoiding a similar social-media fate.

For me, the key takeaway from reading this book is the concept that social media users (kids and adults alike) are branding themselves at all times, whether they realize it or not. Understanding this critical message can help you and your child take a more holistic approach to establishing and managing social media reputation. Whatever your age or position in life, make sure that the branding you choose reflects who you are and are striving to be, and will still be true for you in the years to come. That's one piece of sound advice from a book that is overflowing with thoughtful and effective tactics that can be implemented immediately. Keep it Light, Bright and Polite!

A must have book on social media usage for young people.

In fact, the book is not just for young people. Adults of all ages can benefit from reading this as well. What I really like is how the book organizes the various chapters. First, it talks about how social media can hurt you or your kids future. In the sub-chapter "Making my case" the author lays out a number of subjects to avoid in social media posts, some of those most people would not have thought of. The book then covers the proper way to write posts that will put the writer in a positive light with the reader. Ideas for both everyday posts and posts to impress future colleges or employers are provided. The book then digs deeper into how social media can be used to make you shine. I bought one copy of the book for myself, and now after having read it I plan to get a second copy for my grandchild who is turning 14 in July. I'm giving the book the highest rating since the writing is easy to understand, and since the subject matter is so important. You don't want anyone or anything in your family to be exposed in a negative way on social media, and this book tells you how to avoid that. Well done Mr. Ochs.

The author, a psychiatrist and expert in psychopharmacology, was moved to learn more about reincarnation after patients under hypnosis described detailed, verifiable memories of past-life experiences. Meditation and work with mediums then brought him in contact with "master spirits," who helped him develop a psychoanalytic method grounded in spirituality. If you are searching for some kind of answer

I found this book several years ago, at a time in my life when I was unsure about what to believe in. I had certain beliefs on what afterlife, but I was still searching. I came upon this book because of the author, and I have to say that this book not only changed my outlook on relationships, it changed my life, period. I found myself not only understanding current and past relationships I had had, but WHY I chose them. It made me have a completely different understanding on those I loved or disliked. It also gave me the realisation that hate was a useless emotion.

Although this book doesn't hold ALL the answers, it supplies the reader with the means by which they can heal old wounds, and learn that LOVE is the only answer. When I have a friend or loved one that is searching for answers, I gift them this book.

Guaranteed to alter your thinking about communication. Peters (Communication Studies/Univ. of Iowa) begins this delightful essay by observing that ``Only moderns could be facing each other and be worried about `communicating' as if they were thousands of miles apart.'' For Peters, the concept of communication has evolved in tandem with its technology, leaving us chasing a moving target rather than closing in on a fixed ideal. It appears unavoidable that human beings divide the world into ``me'' and ``not me'' in distinct ways, creating both the joy of a world populated by individual personalities and the frustration of an insuperable barrier to transfers of unmodified meaning from one person to another. Intensifying the quest for ``genuine'' communication, whether introspectively through therapy or socially through increasingly powerful forms of media, expands our expectations along with our capabilities and can produce a crisis of communication in the midst of an information age. Peters is excellent at finding novel ways to illustrate this continuing ``project of reconciling self and other.'' The range of options is presented through contrasting the interactive and selective approach of Socrates (dialogue) with the one-way and all-inclusive approach of Jesus (dissemination). The essential association of communication with existence emerges in consideration of spirits and spiritualism in everything from philosophy to sances. The scope of communicative ambition is underlined by consideration of attempts to interact with animals and aliens. In the end, Peters concludes that the fears of isolation, which have pushed us to pursue communication as the true meeting of minds, have too often overshadowed our appreciation of what is unique. Much better than the Movie, and a truly wonderful story about a wonderful human being

Before reading this book I was vaguely familiar with James J. Braddock as someone interested in boxing, especially Heavyweights. As a side note, that essentially stopped several years ago when boxing degenerated into an alphabet soup set of "champions" and it became hard to maintain any interest in the sport, but I digress. I had seen the movie "Cinderella Man," based on this book, so I was curious about those things in Braddock's life that Movies always have to cut out, or change. So my first comment is that, as much as I liked the movie, the movie has only a slight resemblance to this real life story. Much was left out (obviously due to screen time constraints), but also much was changed. This book provides much more background and life story information about Braddock than the movie could ever show, and it's all good and written very well. The author details Braddocks struggles (and successes) not only in the ring but in life, drawn vividly against the Great Depression. Braddock was a rock solid, hard working, honest, and honorable man. He personified the Horatio Alger story, in which good things happen to those who are good people and work hard at being so. The book also serves as an in-depth reference and insight into what many call the glory years of boxing, with names like Jack Dempsey, Jim Corbett, Max Schmeling, Joe Louis, Primo Carnera, Max Baer, and others. Max Baer is portrayed completely differently than in the movie. In the movie he was a wiseguy smart aleck who had killed two men in the ring. In the book, he was basically a reasonably nice guy with immense physical gifts but very little interest in boxing. The fight between Baer and Braddock for the Heavyweight Championship is completely different than in the movie. The movie angle is admittedly more dramatic, but in reality Baer had not trained hard for the bout, aimed for a knockout in the early rounds, and Braddock stayed away from his big right hand until Baer tired after the 7th round and Braddock mounted up the points - and also gave Baer a pretty good beating. It was not a one punch fight as essentially portrayed in the movie. Braddock's story is compelling. It transcends his life from an early young light heavyweight with a strong chin, a good right hand, and not much else at 21 years old to a washed up, broken handed, on-relief dock worker at 29. But through perseverance, hard work, a love of and dedication to boxing, and a faithful manager (rare in those days, or any days) who never lost hope in him, Braddock finally got a shot again at the championship and real-life had a fairy tale ending. This is truly a 'feel good' book and story, and even better it's true. I enjoyed it immensely.

A Cinderella Story During Depression Era America

Jeremy Schapp does yeoman's work in capturing the backdrop and specifics which lead to James Braddock sensational upset of Max Baer to win the world heavyweight boxing title. This event may well be the most significant upset in the history of boxing. The question is, " how did this happen?" "Cinderella Man" answers that question in spades. The book not only captures the family histories and private lives of Braddock and Baer but also their managers, agents and promoters. Schapp does a great job of capturing the impact of the economic strains and constraints of depression era America and their impact on life, sports in general and boxing in particular. If anyone likes to enjoy a really interesting, good guy story, with a happy ending "Cinderella Man" will meet you needs. A terrific read !

Admiring tribute to a great comeback fighter

James J. Braddock wasn't a great Heavyweight Champ; he lost the title in his first defense bout after he'd won it. But his is, perhaps, the greatest comeback story of 20th century pugilism. The CINDERELLA MAN had heart.

Author Jeremy Schaap's book begins with the commencement of Braddock's comeback in June 1934 with his victory over "Corn" Griffin. Jim's last previous fight had been nine months earlier, at the end of which, with a right hand that had been repeatedly broken and numerous defeats under his belt, he was thought to be washed up. To the point of the Griffin match-up, he was barely able to feed his family with odd jobs on the New York and New Jersey docks and welfare help; it was the Depression, and Braddock's fortunes were at their rock bottom. Then, Schaap regresses in time to the period 1926-33 when Jim fought as a light heavyweight, almost winning that title in 1929. The author alternates the early Braddock saga with the same for the 1929-1934 career of Max Baer, who won the heavyweight title from Primo Canera, also in June 1934, thus setting up the confrontation that established Jim's fame and won him the heavyweight crown, the Braddock-Baer bout in June 1935.

Schaap's summaries of Braddock's eighty-three fights and Baer's forty-seven prior to their epic battle are, almost by necessity in a volume of only 276 pages, spotty in detail, yet are sufficient to establish the two fighters' characters. There is an adequate section of photographs, as well as the complete ring records of both Braddock and Baer and a complete listing of all the heavyweight division champs since John L. Sullivan. For a boxing aficionado, CINDERELLA MAN is perhaps, despite its relative brevity, a must read. For those who otherwise couldn't care less about the sport, then viewing the excellent 2005 film CINDERELLA MAN, starring Russell Crowe in the title role, is the preferred, shorter option that provides all the basics. The visual version skips the preliminaries, starts with Braddock's last fight in 1933, his and his family's descent into near destitution, his enduring relationships with his wife Mae (Renee Zellweger) and manager Joe Gould (Paul Giamatti), his comeback contests versus Griffin, Lewis, and Lasky, and his win by decision over Baer in 15 gritty rounds.

Though it wasn't the author's intent, I gather, it was Baer's personality that came across as the more intriguing, at least for me. Max was a hard-punching, underachieving champ who fell more in love with the perks of his achievements - the fame, women, fine clothes, good food, showmanship - than with the commitment to his profession and hard work necessary to stay at the top. It's one of his quotes that stays with me:

"Listen, I don't want to be one of those champions who fights once a year. I need to fight. Dames are expensive." Truer words were never spoken.

Errors in the formulas and questions are misleading. We spent awful lot of time trying to figure out how to calculate the wrong value

Rife with errors -- authors should be embarrassed

This book is filled with errors. Both mathematical and grammatical. I am studying for the CPIM exam and I don't feel like I can even trust the answer key anymore. The authors should be embarrassed and APICS should re-evaluate their endorsement of this book. It is completely unacceptable that a test reference be this sloppy. Terrible.

the book try to explain every concept through a complex way, which could be done easily and clearly. If you read another book "Introduction to materials management" before, you will understand what I say.

About the Author
Oliver Heywood (1630-1702) was an English Puritan pastor who was deprived of his pulpit for his Protestant beliefs. He cheerfully endured imprisonment and the confiscation of his worldly possessions so that he might bring the truth of the Gospel to his countrymen. Heywood published this book in 1671 while travelling from town to town preaching, in an itinerant ministry that spanned most of his career.

Dr. Mick has done an amazing thing in taking a number of the puritan classics and updating the language without in any way detracting from the depth of theology or the rich writing style that so many have come to appreciate from the Puritans. This title by Oliver Heywood gives the Christian a strong, scripture-based foundation for an obedient life of private prayer. I highly recommend it and am very grateful to Dr. Mick for his continuing efforts in putting these gems into the hands of believers hungry for the deep yet practical writing of these great men of courage and faith.
