About the Author

Lanning B. Kline is Chairman and Professor at University of Alabama at Birmingham, Department of Ophthalmology where he has been a faculty member since 1979. He graduated from Duke University School of Medicine in 1973 and completed fellowships in neuro-ophthalmology at the Montreal Neurological Institute and at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami, Florida. Dr. Kline is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a member of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Rod Foroozan is Director of Neuro-Ophthalmology at the Cullen Eye Institute at Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology. He graduated from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1997 and completed his fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital.

Kathryn Bryant is the creator of the Brilliant Living Blueprint, founder of BrilliantLivingHQ.com, and one half of the Changeability podcast, which she hosts with husband Julian Illman at Changeability.me.

With experience in business and education, Kathryn went from hospitality and pub management, to owning businesses in retail, sports and property. Before moving into education and training where Kathryn pioneered online tutoring in the early days of the internet, helped business owners understand new technology, worked with government, schools and colleges on education and funding policy and connected the worlds of business and education to increase skills and apprenticeships.

Take action as soon as you read this - this is the book that can help you change, if you are willing

Personally, I have some great habits... and quite a few poor ones. I find changing the poor ones almost impossible. That's why I picked this book up (free, using Kindle Unlimited!) and I'm very glad I did. As the author says, "Change can be hard but it doesn't have to be. You see, it's not your fault. Change is supposed to be difficult because that's how we're programmed to be. Yet once you understand that programming and how to work with it, you have a way to increase your success in whatever you want to do."
Very appealing - and the book delivers on its promise of explaining that programming and showing how to manage it. It gives tactics, tools, and techniques to help manage change but, more importantly, it shows that all the tools in the world won't help without the mind's agreement to the change.
This rang a bell with me because, while I really appreciate the importance of positive thinking, I struggle with it because I'm something of a human chameleon! I pick up on the moods and negativity of anyone I'm around. I set my mind on something I want to achieve but find myself procrastinating and struggling because my mind is conflicted, due to the emotions of those I spend time with. If you find yourself yawning when other people yawn, you may be a human chameleon too. Be careful who you spend time with - if they are primarily negative people, you may not be as successful as you could be, due to being dragged down by their negativity.
Rather than locking myself up somewhere without people, I needed to develop strategies to change and not pick up on other people's moods, lack of success, lack of motivation, etc. This book is looking like being the thing I needed - and I've read plenty of self-help manuals.
I like the author's relaxed but well-paced writing style. It's an encouraging mix of popular psychology, business/entrepreneurship, and motivational-speak. Think of a good TED talk put into book format and you've got this book. There’s nothing totally unique here, you will probably have come across a lot of it before. It’s been put together in a very good, do-able way here, though.
The downloadable worksheets that accompany the book are very helpful for following the advice in the book.
If you are thinking of getting this book, I’d advise you to take action on what you read immediately. I’ve read too many self-help books that contain great advice that would work if I had put it into practice... but I didn’t – I was too resistant to change. This is therefore a really great book to take action on, because it’s helping you to chance – if you are willing.

A charming third installment.

The Wedding Wallah by Farahad Zama is the third book of a series (starting with The Marriage Bureau for Rich People) set in my hometown, Vizag. No one ever writes books set in Vizag, so this fact alone almost guarantees that I'd love these books. However, they're also actually pretty well-written, have great characters, and more importantly, they have a lot of heart. They remind me a lot of the The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books by Alexander McCall Smith - slow and somewhat sleepy, but not boring.

Anyway, enough about the series. The Wedding Wallah sees all of our favourite characters return: Mr. and Mrs. Ali's marriage bureau is still doing brisk business, Rehman has still not been cured of his idealism, Pari is still determined to be an independent young woman and Aruna is fully settled into her marriage, although she still helps out at the marriage bureau. We are introduced to a new character, Dilawar, who is from a wealthy and aristocratic family, but hasn't found a bride yet. His family, for whatever reason, believes that the relatively poor Pari would be a good bride for him, despite her widowed status and adopted son. Meanwhile the Naxalites (terrorists with communist ideologies) are growing increasingly active in the villages surrounding Vizag. Intertwined with these are a few stories from the marriage bureau side of things. And of course, people are falling in love all over the place.

The book is as charming as previous installments, and it left me wanting more, immediately. I'm not sure how much this has to do with my excitement whenever a place I know is mentioned (which happens a lot.) I was especially excited when the bookstore that I bought the book from was mentioned as a place that one of the characters bought books from!

I thought the Naxalite plot was a little too dramatic in comparison with the rest of the book; it was a little jarring. However, it still made sense. I think that these book really do capture Vizag very well. The only flaw that I can find is that the people sometimes seem too idealistic. This book is also slightly more racy than the other books, which was fine, but a tiny bit unexpected. I was also glad that the book addressed a few modern issues - the Naxalites are portrayed fairly, showing both the bad and the good, and I thought that the inclusion of gay rights in India was also a nice touch and a nice nod to the recent decriminalisation of homosexuality.

I'm just frustrated that I don't live in the UK, since that's the only way I can pre-order the next book on Amazon!

The Marriage Bureau adventures continue. . .

"The Wedding Wallah" was a lovely book that builds on the previous two installments in the series. Mr Zama has a talent for writing simply and clearly about India and its people and customs and the pressing social issues of the day. Over the course of the series, I have fallen in love with the Ali family, Aruna and her family and Pari and her adopted son Vasu. In this book, we are introduced to Dilawar, an old friend of Rehman, and a potential bridegroom for Pari. Dilawar is in love with a young man though and afraid to expose himself to condemnation from the society that he lives in. He is a wonderful addition to the storyline and I hope he will be a regular in the series. Along with the tales of Indian matchmaking, Mr. Zama returns to the country to examine the struggle between the poor farmers and big agricultural interests and then introduces us to a group of guerrillas that believe in kidnapping and causing mayhem in order to bring attention to their cause. It is here that I found that the transition from the business of love to the business of guerrilla warfare a bit jarring. The series until now was also quite innocent and left quite a bit to the imagination, however with the addition of the guerrillas, Aruna is placed into two different situations which (if this were a movie) would change the rating from "G" to "PG" or maybe "R". In some ways, "The Wedding Wallah" is like two different books. One of the books moves along slowly and sweetly and the other is just a bit too hectic. I did enjoy the resolution though and felt that the book went back on track once the guerilla story was resolved. In conclusion, it's a great book, just a little convoluted in parts. I'm hoping for another book in the series very soon and *I wish that Mrs. Ali would continue her writing exercises--they are delightful and informative.*

Everyday life in India

Mr Ali's marriage bureau is flourishing. His assistant, Aruna is about to take a break with her husband Ram and Pari - a cousin of Mr Ali's is going to take over from her for a time because she has lost her own job in a call centre. Pari lives opposite Mr and Mrs Ali and has an adopted son. She has received a proposal of marriage from a wealthy man which she is considering. As a widow she can choose her own marriage partner.

As other reviewers have mentioned this third book in the series covers much darker themes - the activities of a group of terrorists, the Naxilites, and the lack of acceptance of homosexuality in India. There are still many amusing incidents and a focus on the good aspects of human nature. Women look after sick relatives and put the family's interests before their own. Maybe some people seem too selfless to our Western eyes but it is not that long since women in the West would have been expected to exhibit the same behaviour.

I liked the way Mrs Ali is still working behind the scenes when she considers it necessary to influence the way things are going. People who read the first book in the series The Marriage Bureau for Rich People will recall the way she presented Aruna to Mr Ali as a suitable assistant. I also liked the insight this series gives into life in India today. People have mobile phones and computers but many aspects of their lives might seem primitive to Western eyes. Mrs Ali drying tamarinds and tomatoes in the sun seems odd to us as well as unhygienic. But there is something warm and friendly about the society these books portray and I always think that I can smell, hear and see everyday life when I read these books.

Heartwarming lecture

Let me start by saying that I'm not in the medical field, but I enjoyed this reading very much. This book is a sincere narration of the experiences that the author lived during his long career. Rather taking credit for all of his success (which is quite impresive), Dr Pena describes in a very humbling way his gratitude for the people that has helped him during the years, and his admiration for the parents of his patients who will go above and beyond anything for their children. Using a series of short stories, Dr Pena shows a very human side of the medical field.

When I closed the book at the end, there was a tear on the corner of my eye and a smile on my face.

modern medicine... the old fashioned way

I phoned Dr. Pena's office a few weeks ago to ask a question about my daughter. (I had quadruplets in1991) Not about the daughter he had operated on two decades ago, but her sister. Dr. Pena himself answered the phone and immediately recognized our family. We spoke for 20 minutes; catching up first then discussing the reason for my call. It is the type of man he is. The book is his voice; passionate and frank. I'm thrilled I heard his voice in my head as I read it. Dr. Pena was one of the first surgeons we worked with and set the standard for how I determined how to select all doctors afterwards. You may think it's written simply, but you will find it touches every level of your life.

An excellent book from a quality human being!

I bought this book after Dr. Pena helped a family member. I traveled from Pennsylvania to his clinic to benefit from his expertise! His care changed our family's life. A true angel and scholar! When I became aware that he wrote a book I wanted to read it! As an advanced practice nurse and a mother, I continue to be impressed with this man's grace. Beautiful book....inspirational and lovely! If you are interested in how a true physician thinks and moves buy this book, read it, and be moved! A true gem of a doctor!

And following this argument are 20 chapters in which Anselm artfully unfolds the depth and breadth of God’s true existence as that than which nothing greater is able to be thought, showing God to be (among other things) able-to-sense, pity-hearted, just, good, and uncircumscribed. Indeed, if the reader is willing to give himself over to the work as whole, he will be compelled, under Anselm’s deft guidance, to “endeavor to straighten up his mind toward contemplating God,” which is how Anselm describes his own role in the work in his prefatory remarks.
��� This edition provides a faithful yet readable English rendering of the whole Proslogion, the objections raised to Anselm’s argument by his contemporary Gaunilo, and Anselm’s replies to those objections. (After responding to Gaunilo, Anselm himself requested that these objections and replies be included in subsequent editions of the Proslogion.) This edition also includes an introduction that contextualizes the Proslogion within the monastic, pre-Scholastic age in which it first made its appearance.� In addition, by means of notes and commentary, this edition articulates how to contextualize Anselm’s famous argument in the Proslogion as a whole and in light of his replies to Gaunilo, how to appreciate the artistry whereby Anselm knit the Proslogion together into a coherent and concise unity, and how the work may be taught effectively to interested students. These features set this affordable English edition of the Proslogion apart from those currently available, which too often fail to capture accurately the beauty of Anselm’s prose, which often treat the work through the lens of either later Scholasticism or contemporary analytic philosophy of religion, and which take little note of the craftsmanship whereby Anselm constructed this masterfully integrated work that is remembered too often for too few of its 24 chapters.

Best Suited to Academia

The "recognizable structure of reasoning" that "emerges" in the Proslogion "can be called a 'pattern of erotic thinking,'" says Matthew Walz in the Introduction, quoting himself. Moreover, he says, the Proslogion "is an essentially zetetic work." If you are able to understand these statements without more, then this book is for you. The book and St. Anselm's work are not an easy read. Indeed, Walz says he "prioritize[d]" "literalness" over "easy readability" when translating,

Even the Proslogion's idea of God as "something than which nothing greater is able to be thought" is quite a mouthful. Walz insists that Anselm's work should be read and understood from the vantage point of monasticism and the time before and at which it was written rather than through the eyes of later scholasticism or Kantian spectacles with the lens of the "ontological argument." In this insistence, the book is at its best, and Walz is convincing.

The text of the book is set in a small font; the endnotes, which can be quite lengthy, are even smaller. Walz translated from Latin and he includes a key to how he translated certain words. In his Introduction he explains some of his unconventional translations.

This book is probably best suited to academia.
